Senior researcher, head of the unit of Florence of the Institute of Ecosystem Study.
31 years of research experience with CNR. In particular his research activity deal with the:

  1. Development of new photobioreactor designs for cultivation of photosynthetic microorganisms;
  2. Biofuels from microalgae (biodiesel and biohydrogen);
  3. Mass cultivation of microalgae and cyanobacteria for the extraction of fine chemicals;
  4. Acclimation of photosynthetic apparatus to high light, and other environmental stress;
  5. Wastewater treatment using microalgae and cyanobacteria.

He is the Italian representative within the International Energy Association- Hydrogen Implementing Agreement (IEA-HIA) - Task 21 Bio-Hydrogen (sub-task C).

  • Hydrobio (2006-2009): Develompment of a high-performance photobioreactor design for hydrogen production, supported by the Italian Ministry of Education (FISR-MIUR).
  • EBH2 (2007-2008): Electro-Bio-Idrogeno, supported by Tuscany Region (Italy);
  • EU project Cyanofactory (2012-2014): Design, construction and demonstration of solar biofuel production using novel (photo)synthetic cell factories
